Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained

Queensland splits licensing in two: the plumber on the tools needs an occupational licence, and the company taking the job on needs a contractor licence. The QBCC grants both. An occupational licence proves the individual's trade competence, while a contractor licence proves the firm behind the job can run it as a business.

Each class covers different work:

  1. Plumber

looks after water-side work above ground, short of anything endorsed separately.

  2. Drainer

looks after below-ground drainage, again short of endorsed work.

  3. Gasfitter

gas work needs its own ticket, spanning the installation, alteration, repair, service, testing and certification of a gas system and its pipework.

Before gas work starts, an owner is entitled to sight the gas work licence. All regulated work, in every category, falls to a licensed plumber or drainer, which the QBCC says safeguards the house, the owner's health and the owner's rights.

Paperwork and Inspections After a Job

Two bodies share the checking, each with its own job: the QBCC licenses plumbers and keeps the record of notifiable jobs, while the local council processes applications, grants permits and carries out inspections. Depending on the job, you may receive:

  1. A Form 4

once notifiable work is finished, the owner or whoever booked the plumber receives a copy. A missing copy can be requested from the QBCC.

  2. A gas system compliance certificate

when gas work finishes on a new installation or alteration, the gasfitter gives the owner the certificate immediately and files a copy with the network operator inside 5 days.

An owner may also request a council inspection of notifiable work at any point, and an inspector can call in, with the occupier's consent, up to 1 year after the notice.

How a Visit Runs

  1. 1

    Describe the problem

Phone (07) 3523 6417 or fill in the form with what you're seeing in Spring Hill. The more we know, the better we can prepare.

  2. 2

    We diagnose on site

We come out, check the fixture or line and work out what has actually gone wrong. A dripping mixer in a Gregory Terrace flat, a slow drain low on a ridge street or a heater wedged into an old pantry each get read on their merits.

  3. 3

    Agree on the price

A fixed quote comes before any work starts: flat-rate pricing, no hidden fees, and your go-ahead first.

  4. 4

    Pay on completion

Card or EFTPOS on site when everything's working, or ask us about Fix now, pay later.
